The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
